5 habits to boost happiness

Have you ever wondered why some people just seem happier than others? No matter what life throws at them, they still find joy in the little things. The truth is, happiness isn’t something that just happens—it’s built, day by day, through simple habits that make a real difference. These are the habits that can help bring more joy and balance into your life, just as they have for me.

You’ve probably heard about gratitude before, but it’s not just about saying a quick “thanks.” It’s about intentionally taking a moment to acknowledge what’s good in your life. And here’s the thing: our brains are wired to focus on the negative. Did you know that for every bad thing that happens, you need five positive things to balance it out?

I often find myself overthinking when I’m stressed. I’ll catch myself spiraling, and instead of letting it get to me, I stop, take a deep breath, and list everything I’m grateful for. It doesn’t erase the stress, but it reminds me of the good. Every night before bed, try writing down five things that made you smile that day—no matter how small. Over time, this simple habit rewires your brain to focus on the positive, and trust me, it makes a difference.

2. Spend time outdoors

Nature is seriously underrated. A simple walk, even a quick trip to the grocery store or shopping, can lift your mood and clear your mind. I know it’s hard sometimes—especially in winter when temperatures drop to -30°C here in Canada—but once you make outdoor time part of your routine, it becomes something you crave.

Even 15 minutes of fresh air a day can work wonders for your mental health. Whether you’re taking a break from work or running errands, stepping outside can change the way you feel instantly.

3. Connect with others

We’re social creatures, even if you’re more of an introvert like me. And no, you don’t need to be out at parties every weekend. But making time to connect with people who lift you up is essential. It could be a quick coffee with a friend or even a chat with a neighbor. These small connections add up, and over time, they can really boost your happiness.

Surround yourself with positivity, and you’ll start noticing how it rubs off on you.

4. Move your body

I know, I know—exercise is on every list. But hear me out: it doesn’t have to be a hardcore workout. Sometimes, just a light stretch in the morning gives me the energy I need to start my day. It doesn’t have to be much, but moving your body releases endorphins—the happy hormones—that instantly improve your mood.

Find what feels good for you, whether it’s dancing, yoga, or a walk around the block. The key is to choose something you enjoy so it’s not a chore, but something you look forward to.

5. Start journaling

Journaling isn’t just about writing down your thoughts. It’s about getting to know yourself better, understanding your emotions, and finding clarity in all the noise. For me, journaling has been a game changer in helping me process how I feel. It’s my way of checking in with myself, especially when life feels overwhelming.

If you want to start journaling but don’t know where to begin, I’ve created a Journal Template that makes it super easy to track your thoughts, moods, and goals. It’s helped me, and I think it could help you too. You can grab it here, and yes, it’s completely free.

These aren’t just random tips—they’re habits that have transformed my life. Start small, pick one or two, and see how they fit. Happiness is a journey, and every step you take gets you closer to where you want to be. I hope these habits help you find more joy in your everyday life.
